Banco Santander Central Hispano is reported to be ending the specific alliance with Societe Generale regarding stock warrant distribution in Spain, preferring to market its own in future. Some sources are reading more into this and believe the deeper relationship between the two may be ending also. BSCH are the largest shareholder in SocGen.
It was the holdings by BSCH and CGNU in SocGen that were important in SocGen defeating the hostile bid by BNP. CGNU announced that it was cutting its holding in SocGen by around a third last week. The CGNU decision followed a year of unsuccessful talks to try and agree a life bancassurance deal with SocGen. It is widely thought that CGNU will reduce their holding in SocGen further in the future.
