Date 29/01/2001
Companies BANCO SANTANDER CENTRAL HISPANO -
Subject BSCH net up 43% for full year

Banco Santander Central Hispano reported a net profit of €2258m up 43% on 1999 for the full year 2000. The bank's profit increase showed no signs of slowing with 4th quarter profits up 69% on the year ago period. Net interest income reached €8.29bn, an increase of 24%, whilst fees & other income were up 30% at €3.08bn. Loans outstanding increased one third to €169.4bn.

Operating costs were up 25%. A considerable part of this increase was due to the purchases made and companies integrated within the accounts. This view is supported by the efficiency ratio which improved 1.6 points to 56.1.

BSCH does not report on a pro forma basis and the increases are heavily influenced by acquisitions. Like its rival BBVA, the bank was also helped by a surge in Spanish consumer borrowing and improving economies in South America. The BSCH figures were those expected and the share price was left unchanged. Concern remains over the very high price paid for the Brazilian Banco do Estado de Sao Paulo and analysts will be watching the performance closely this year.

€1,000 was trading at £630 $919.
