Reports suggest that having discussed and perhaps persuaded Generali to double its equity in Commerzbank the bank is now seeking a similar move from Banco Santander Central Hispano. Like Generali BSCH owns around 5% in Commerzbank and the reports suggest Commerzbank is encouraging the bank to increase this up to 10%.
BSCH holds equity in a number of major European banks including Royal Bank of Scotland, Societe Generale and Banca Sanpaolo-IMI as well as Commerzbank. Whether it would wish to invest more in Commerzbank given the low shareholder returns remains to be seen.
