The share offering by Banco Santander Central Hispano, was 3.7 times over-subscribed, despite the bank deciding to increase the shares on offer half way through the preparations for the offering. The final offering consisted of Pts551bn (E3.3bn UKP2.1bn $3.2bn) and increased the share capital by 8.5%. Retail buyers gained a discount of E0.25 compared with institutions. This had the advantage of increasing the number of shareholders by 54%. It is believed the prime purpose of the money will be to fund further expansion in South America. The bank is fighting with fellow Spanish bank, Banco Bilbao Vizcayo Argentaria for dominance of the continent. BBVA carried out a similar offering just over a month ago.
