Banco Santander Central Hispano exceeded expectations with the 1st quarter figures. Net profit was E483.2m (UKP284.9m $449.5m). The bank said that commissions and Investment Fund income had helped domestic profitability and that the South American operations were contributing to a much greater extent also. 46% of profits came from the extensive South American operations of BSCH.
