  Banco Santander Central Hispano is now the proud owner of 94% of Banco Totta & Accores and 71% of Credito Predial Portugues following the deal with Antonio Champalimaud which became an international dispute last year between the Portuguese government and the European Commission. Champalimaud in return becomes the owner of around 4% of BSCH. The largest bank controlled by the Mundial Confianca group was excluded in an eventual compromise agreement, Banco Pinto & Sotto Mayor. No plans have been announced yet for the future of the insurance company itself, which gave its name to the Portuguese group. Various minority shareholders in the insurer which include a number of foreign financial service companies were unhappy when the insurer got dragged into the international banking dispute.


Banco Pinto & Sotto Mayor is currently being auctioned and a rumoured bidder is fellow Spanish bank, Banco Bilbao Vizcayo Argentaria. Favourite to win the bidding however is Banco Comercial Portugues. BBVA has also announced its intention to start Internet banking operations in Portugal shortly.
