Banco Santander Central Hispano is to pay Pts10bn (E60m UKP39m) to buy out Banco Comercial Portugues from the Private banking joint venture, Banif, they own equally. The original deal between Banco Central Hispano and BCP was that the joint venture would allow the banks to each develop private banking in their own territory. BCH later merged with Banco Santander to form BSCH.
The private bank is profitable and said to have one third of the Spanish Private banking market. No figures have been provided as to its success in Portugal.
